Volunteers Needed to Develop Unique Weaverville Treasure Hunt

  • Treasure hunts are older than the Spanish Armada, but a new twist to the age-old pursuit can be found in Questing. Questing on public lands brings communities together by creating and exchanging treasure hunts to explore local natural and cultural heritage.
The Trinity County Resource Conservation District plans to start a Questing trail in Weaverville on the West Weaver – Oregon St. trail and is seeking volunteers to help create and define the Quest.
Every Quest has a title, directions to the starting point, clues (often in verse) and maps or drawings to assist people in finding the treasure box hidden at the end of the quest. A hand-carved stamp is placed in the treasure box for Questers to mark their "passports." This global recreational and educational activity provides residents and visitors alike a new way to get outside and explore our public lands.
Volunteers will help scout the trail, write the clues, draw the maps, and decide on the treasure box placement, while being guided by RCD staff. People of all ages – families, students, and individuals - who like to be outdoors, have knowledge of local natural and cultural history, like solving/creating riddles and puzzles, and who are intrigued by treasure hunts are welcome to join us.
Our first planning meeting will be held Thursday, January 26 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. in the TCRCD conference room at 1 Horseshoe Lane, Weaverville (it has been rescheduled from the 19th due to weather). Dates and times for future work and planning on the Weaverville Quest will be decided at this meeting. For further information, or if you can't make this meeting time but would like to participate in future work on this project, please contact Donna at the TCRCD at 623-6004.

Invasive Weed Removal Volunteers Needed!

  • Join us for a Scotch Broom weed pulling party in Hyampom on Saturday, December 17th. Meet in Hyampom at the Community Center at 10am. James Johansing has spearheaded a group of locals who would like to eradicate the noxious weed in Hyampom Valley. We'll be using "weed wrenches" to pull Scotch Broom and we'll be attempting to make it a fun event, possibly even with live music to entertain us, if the weather allows. The valley will be beautiful and the river will be full of fish so come out and make it an excuse to hang out for the weekend.
The US Forest Service, the Trinity County RCD, and the Watershed Center will be providing the tools. Just bring a set of gloves, some clothing that you don't mind getting dirty, and a good attitude and we'll have a good time. The event will take place rain or shine. Some refreshments will be provided. Please call Josh Smith at 628-4206 if you have any questions.
